- Selected 157 elementary schools through a story contest for the transparent umbrella - distributed 100,000, beginning with the declaration ceremony

On 21 May, MOBIS announced plans to distribute 100,000 transparent umbrellas this year for students in 157 elementary schools across the nation.
MOBIS announced its 'Third Transparent Umbrella Donation for Children’s Transportation Safety’ in Gaeil Elementary School, located in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. In attendance were 200 students, school officials, Song Myeongseon, the manager of Transportation Safety Department, Ministry of Land, Transport and maritime Affairs, Jeong Heudon, the director of Transportation Safety Authority, Go Seok, the president of Korea Children’s Safety Foundation and Jun Ho-Suck, the President of MOBIS.
“I think it is a significant achievement that the transparent umbrella donation is now celebrating its third year, helping drivers to prevent traffic accidents involving children”, Jun Ho-Suck, the President of MOBIS said in his speech. He added that “MOBIS will make greater efforts to develop human-oriented automotive technology that protects drivers as well pedestrians.”
The event saw Kim Jongseok, a comedian and an honorary ambassador for the transparent umbrella donation, as the host, and featured Paper Animation to introduce the purpose of this donation. There was also a ballet performed by Gaeil Elementary School students which added a personal touch to hopes for traffic safety.
After the handover ceremony, elementary school students participated in a program using the Traffic Safety Bus and were given a chance to learn ▲ how to get on/off the bus in safety ▲ the importance of using seatbelts for keeping safe under sudden braking ▲ how to evacuate in the case of a fire inside the vehicle, and ▲ how cross the street at a crosswalk. They were able to experience things directly related to children’s safety in real-life.
The event marked the first time that MOBIS has selected an elementary school through a story contest, which it chose to do in line with its principle of delivering value through sharing and participation, and also to drum up more interest about children’s transportation safety. Last April, MOBIS invited the public to submit an entry for the story contest and an idea contest for the children’s transportation safety through its website; it then selected the elementary schools that would receive the bubble umbrella.
Amongst the stories selected in the contest, there was one about a principal who bakes bread for his students in one elementary school with 50 students located in Mokpo, Jeollado, and another about a mother who checks the safety line and lighting hour of traffic light at crosswalk in front of her child’s school.
Since 2011, when MOBIS realized the seriousness of traffic accidents involving children, MOBIS has promoted this clear bubble umbrella donation as its core social contribution activity in order to prevent accidents from occurring. The total number of umbrellas distributed so far has now reached 300,000, including 100,000 umbrellas made this year; 555 elementary schools were selected for this activity.
The ‘transparent umbrella for children’s transportation safety’ was specially designed by MOBIS and gives children a clear view on a rainy day, preventing traffic accidents that may otherwise occur in the rain. Plus, the umbrella is made of a material that reflects the light to help drivers be aware of children carrying the umbrella in the dark.
Another important design feature is an emergency whistle that is attached to help the children to more effectively grab the attention and help of people nearby and consequently prevent crimes against children.
